Man jumps to his death from the 4th floor while being questioned on suspicion of theft in Oita

OITA – On the night of the 24th, a man in Oita City, who was being questioned by police officers on suspicion of theft, jumped to his death from his fourth-floor apartment.

At around 7:30 p.m. on February 24, police were called to a drugstore in Oita City to report that a man had shoplifted and escaped.
Police officers from the Oita Central Police Station were investigating when they found a man in his 40s living in Oita City who resembled the man who fled on a nearby street, and questioned him voluntarily.
During the process, the man said he wanted to go home, so a police officer accompanied him back to his apartment, and shortly after, the man jumped off the balcony on the fourth floor of the building.
He was immediately transported to the hospital, but died approximately one hour later.
Commenting on the incident, Deputy Chief Takamitsu Okuda of the Oita Central Police Station said, “It is unfortunate that a person under investigation was killed. We will continue to investigate the details of the situation.”
