Tohoku University and NTT Docomo announces that they will work together to develop “artificial intelligence” technology where it can detect gum disease by studying picture taken with smartphones.

The plan is to begin this April 2019 study, which is intended for use in April 2022.

AI software can diagnose mouth diseases by analyzing it in through photo taken by smartphones. Not only gum diseases but also mouth cancer, jaw arthritis and other mouth diseases.

When their plan succeeds, they will also be used by the public so that they can assess themselves and provide immediate treatment. They also plan to make another app to be use exclusively by the doctors to use in oral cancer detection.

“Because dental care or dental assessments rates are low, we want to develop technology so that app users can easily diagnose if they have gum disease,” said Tohoku University Prof. Keiichi Sasaki Thursday, February 21, at a press conference in Tokyo.
