HOKKAIDO – On the evening of March 8, a 66-year-old man was struck and killed by a passenger car while crossing a road in Nakasatsunai Village in eastern Hokkaido.

The accident occurred on Route 236 in Odori 4-chome, Nakasatsunai-mura. 66-year-old Norihiro Sakuta, was crossing the road at 8:00 p.m. on March 8, when he was hit by a passenger car.
Sakuta was confirmed dead at the hospital where he was taken.
Police arrested the driver of the passenger car, a 43-year-old dairy farmer from Sarabetsu Village, on the spot on suspicion of negligent homicide.
The suspect was on his way to go shopping alone. When questioned, he said, “I am sure that I caused the accident,” and admitted the charge.
The scene was a straight one-lane road with no traffic lights or crosswalks nearby.
Police are continuing to investigate the cause of the accident in detail, including the circumstances at the time.
