HYOGO – A man was arrested on suspicion of stealing New Year’s greeting cards from a mailbox at a housing complex in Nishinomiya City, Hyogo Prefecture. The man said he did it to distract himself from his loneliness.

The suspect, Yuki Terai, is suspected of stealing five New Year’s cards from a mailbox at an apartment complex in Nishinomiya City at around 10:00 a.m. on New Year’s Day of this year.
Subsequently on January 16, a total of over 1,200 New Year’s cards were posted in several mailboxes in the city. The post office became suspicious of the postcards and consulted the police. The police conducted an investigation and was able to identify the suspect from security cameras in the area.
The police are investigating the suspect’s motive, since he had redeemed the winning New Year’s greeting cards for four stamp sheets from the cards that he stole.
