In Okinawa Prefecture, a record number of 1,759 people were confirmed infected last Saturday, and the infection is spreading rapidly throughout the prefecture. In Miyakojima City, where more than 1,000 people per 100,000 people have been infected in the past week, elementary and junior high schools have been temporarily closed since today.
Hiroko Oshiro, Director of Education, Miyakojima City
We have decided to close the schools because we want to stop the infection from spreading to the schools at all costs.
This is the third time this year that Miyakojima City has closed its schools, following June and September last year. The school closure period is set to last until the 17th of this month, but may be extended depending on the infection situation.
