Collapsed stairs in apartment building kills a 58-year-old woman, resident of Hachioji, Tokyo
TOKYO – A 58-year-old woman in critical condition died after falling down the stairs of an apartment building in Hachioji, Tokyo, on April 17.
The accident occurred on the 17th of this month at a three-story apartment building in Minami-Shinmachi, Hachioji City, when part of the stairs leading from the first floor to the second floor suddenly collapsed.
Satomi Ote (58), a resident who was climbing the stairs, fell from a height of about 2 meters and was in critical condition.
According to the investigators, the apartment building is eight years old, and the stairs that collapsed were made of steel, but the part that connects to the building was made of wood and is believed to have been corroded.
After the accident, the residents of the second and third floors evacuated to a nearby hotel, and the Metropolitan Police Department is investigating the cause of the accident in detail with a view to suspicion of professional negligence.
